Title: Green IoT and Data Analytics for Smart Cities
Abstract:
Cities around the world are currently under quick transition towards low carbon environment, high quality of living, and resource efficient economy. Internet of Things (IoT) and big data are powering the smart cities of the future by addressing societal challenges, such as air quality, transportation, and energy efficiency. In this talk, we will present our research project, called Green IoT, which provides artificial intelligence and open data for sustainable development. In this project, we developed an intelligent IoT system for air pollution monitoring in Uppsala, Sweden. We will present the system design, testbed development, and data analytics for urban monitoring and prediction. We will further present how distributed machine learning can provide intelligence and resilience for the IoT systems. Finally, we will highlight our on-going research activities on data analytics and machine learning for decision support in smart cities.
Speaker’s Bio:
Edith Ngai is currently an Associate Professor in Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University, Sweden. She received her PhD from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2007. She was a post-doc in Imperial College London, United Kingdom in 2007-2008. Her research interests include Internet-of-Things, mobile cloud computing, network security and privacy, smart city and urban informatics. She was a guest researcher at Ericsson Research Sweden in 2015-2017. Previously, she was a visiting researcher in Simon Fraser University, Tsinghua University, and UCLA. Edith was a VINNMER Fellow (2009) awarded by Swedish Governmental Research Funding Agency VINNOVA. She served as TPC members in various international conferences, including IEEE ICDCS, IEEE ICC, IEEE Infocom, IEEE Globecom, IEEE/ACM IWQoS, and IEEE CloudCom, etc. She was a program chair of ACM womENcourage 2015, TPC co-chair of IEEE SmartCity 2015, IEEE ISSNIP 2015, and ICNC 2018 Network Algorithm and Performance Evaluation Symposium. She is an Associate Editor of IEEE Internet of Things Journal, IEEE Transactions of Industrial Informatics, and IEEE Access. Edith is a Senior Member of ACM and IEEE.

Sept 6 Seminar: Deep Learning as a Service for IoT Systems

Title: Deep Learning as a Service for IoT Systems
Speaker: Professor Tarek Abdelzaher, Department of Computer Science, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, US
Date: Friday September 6

Time: 9.15 to approx 10.15

Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) heralds the emergence of multitudes of computing-enabled networked everyday devices with sensing capabilities in homes, cars, workplaces, and on our persons, leading to ubiquitous smarter environments and smarter cyber-physical “things”. The next natural step in this computing evolution is to develop the infrastructure needed for these computational things to collectively learn. Advances in deep learning offer remarkable results but require significant computing resources. The talk discusses advances in deep learning geared to empower the emerging world of embedded IoT devices. These advances tackle challenges such as resource-efficiency (to fit neural networks on small mobile devices), foundations of quality assurances, and cost of labeling. Recent solutions demonstrate the feasibility of building IoT applications that are powered by effective, efficient, and reliable deep learning models. Evaluation results and experiences presented offer encouraging evidence of viability of deep learning for IoT.

Location:
The coffee room of our new office facilities in the Natural Sciences Building, room C2-04-08.

Application for AI Education Development 2019

AI Competence for Sweden is a national effort to increase competence in AI in Sweden. As part of the AI Competence for Sweden efforts at Umeå University, we  hereby invite researchers and teachers at Umeå University to apply for resources to be spent at Umeå University during 2019 to:
1)    Transform/develop existing AI-courses to make them accessible to professionals in industry and in the AI Sweden portal,
2)    Further develop AI modules, or include (more) AI in existing courses at basic or advanced levels.

We would like to encourage in particular development initiatives at the Humanities, Social Sciences and Medical faculties.

Apply for development resources using this link.

Deadline for the application Round 1: 2019-09-16 (notification Sep 23) (closed)
Note that the resources to be allocated to a course will not exceed 40 hours. The effort will be similar in size as in 2018 – about 520 hours will be allocated to 15-20 courses. A report should be submitted December 8th at the latest.

Deadline for the application Round 2: 2019-11-08 (notification Nov 12)
Note that the resources to be allocated to a course will not exceed 40 hours. The effort will be similar in size as in 2018 – about 520 hours will be allocated to 15-20 courses. A report should be submitted January 8th 2020 at the latest.

Participation in the AI Education@UmU workshop on September 5 is encouraged for all who plan to submit an application! More info on the workshop and registration form can be found here.
